Mixplate Monday 5.30.11

Happy Memorial Day! Hope you’re having a lovely day off :) Not taking a day off from SC, though, so let’s play another round of Mixplate Monday…

Last Week’s Highlights

  • Played the usual Mixplate Monday
  • Took a day off to take care of myself and my foot
  • Reconnected with an old friend, who happened to stop by my mom’s on a whim while I was there; It’s good to see her happy & healthy, and with a beautiful little baby girl!
  • Went to Bobert’s for dinner; Poke, chicken & biscuits, and Drumsticks!
  • Stopped by Peppa’s with Bobert and realized, on our way to Walmart, that I’d locked my keys in the car :( We bussed it to Walmart and shopped (for dog stuff, of course!) until my mom could meet me with the spare key
  • Had the worse day of pain yet for my foot (aside from the day I actually ripped the nail off, of course). It must have been all that walking at Walmart!
  • Shake ‘n Bake at my mom’s, yum!

Weekend Happenings

  • Spent most of Saturday in bed, with my foot propped up on my new pillows
  • Honolulu Burger Co. (grass-fed beef!) and The Hangover: Part II with Bobert
  • Started a new book, High Crimes by Joseph Finder
  • BBQ with Mom, Uncle Pete, Shayde, Uncle Alika, Uncle Zack, Aunty Jenn, Dominic, Tiari, Eduardo, Tyxae, Tiffany, Bryson and Brucey, and Joelle, Jayson & Daniel joined us via Skype <3
  • Pono Girl came over to drop off dem puppies! I love my Hua & Hinano so much already :)

On the Agenda

  • Paying: Some bills; Boy is the end of the month my least favorite time for my bank account!
  • Cooking: For the Honolulu Advertiser sports department reunion; Can’t wait to see my old friends and co-workers :)
  • Devising: A savings plan! With vacations, more school and a possible move on the horizon, I’ve got to beef up that bank account!

As of Today
Today’s a holiday, don’t you know! I’ll probably spend most of the day posted on my mom’s couch watching reruns, eating BBQ leftovers and playing silly Facebook games :) And loving up on my puppies, of course!

I wanna know, what were your recent highlights? And what are you up to?

Cheers!
Tiera

I’m Expecting! (Puppies, that is)

Last fall, my friend Pono’s dogs had puppies. She sold most of the litter (and at the time my Ikaika and Maka were still with us, so we weren’t in the market), and kept a pair of pups for herself.

Pono’s a busy girl; She works three jobs and lives alone. So when she mentioned it was getting a little overwhelming (and pretty expensive) to care for all four dogs I asked my mom if we could have one of the puppies at her house, and she said we can have them both!

I’m so excited to be a dog mama again :) I’ve been scouring the interwebs looking for cute matching pup stuff for our brother-sister pair, and you can see some of my faves on this Pinterest board! I think we’re officially getting the adorable dachshund/fox terrier/chihuahuas this weekend, and I can’t wait!

I wanna know, are you a pet owner? What kind of dog/cat/fish/bird/guinea pig/creature do you have?

Xoxo,
Tiera

Mixplate Moday 5.23.11

I’m officially calling myself immobile :( I don’t know how something as small as a toe can cause so much pain, but it certainly is! I’ve got my foot stacked on a couple of pillows and will likely be in this position most of the day. Hopefully sometime this afternoon I’ll be able to put my foot down long enough to drive myself home. In the mean time, hope you’re having a better Monday than I!

Last Week’s Highlights

  • Played the usual Mixplate Monday
  • Saw Fast Five with the bff and her bf. It was amazing in it’s ridiculousness!
  • Got an email from a colleague who knew an uncle I haven’t seen or heard from in years; Sent me on a mini emotional roller coaster
  • Had a mini girls night with Dana, saw Bridesmaids (hilarious!) and had dinner at Buca di Beppo
  • Wished everyone a happy Aloha Friday
  • Had a sleepover at my mom’s (which has now stretched a few days, lol!)

Weekend Happenings

  • Lunched with my Uncle Alika, who visited us for the day
  • Had myself a little accident and ended up in the ER :(
  • Missed my cousin Bodi’s high school graduation (Congrats!) and helping the bff pack for her move to Cali for the summer
  • But had a wonderful experience (my first) with Kaiser
  • Spent Sunday holed up with my foot in the air, but at least Uncle Zack made me a giant pot of corn chowder :)
  • Talked for an hour or so with my Uncle David, who I don’t get to see too much of since he moved to Canada

On the Agenda

  • Tending to my poor toe! I need to keep it clean and bandaged until the nail falls off :( Which could take weeks, double :( :(
  • Waiting to hear whether or not I’ve been accepted for Olympic tickets!
  • Getting two new puppies! More on that asap :)
  • Courtney’s graduation/pageant sendoff party
  • Hopefully bbqing withe the fam over the weekend (no surprise there) while my grandma’s in from LV, and if my uncle can visit us again

As of Today

  • Keeping my right leg propped up on pillows
  • Trying not to feel pain in my toe
  • Watching reruns and eating leftover corn chowder
  • And hopefully trying to walk around a bit and drive myself home

I wanna know, what were your recent highlights? And what are you up to?

Cheers!

I Happen To Like Kaiser

Not to get too serious or boring, but I know that medical insurance is a really important thing (and it should be). I recently changed coverage and thought my experience was worth sharing.

A couple of months ago our medical plan options changed at work. I’d had HMSA my whole life, and had heard some pretty crappy things about Kaiser over the years — But the way things were going at my job, my company would cover the entire premium for Kaiser (I’d have to pay out of pocket for HMSA). In the spirit of budgeting (and considering the fact that I don’t actually visit the doctor too often), I reluctantly chose Kaiser.

But you know what? I don’t think I had anything to be worried about! When I visited the ER yesterday at the Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center and Clinic, I had a really great experience.

I was brought in via wheelchair (which was a little embarrassing), and the entire process took little more than an hour:

  • A few minutes to check in: Provided my ID and medical card, and only one form to sign
  • Wheeled in immediately to see a nurse to take my vitals
  • Taken to an exam room right away
  • A few minutes wait for my consult with the doc
  • A few more minutes for him to come back with the anesthetic
  • A tech came in to clean out my toe (It was actually kind of cool, he filled up a needle with water and used it at a water gun to shoot water at my toe!)
  • The doc returned to take a better look and feel around, and set the nail back in place
  • A tech came to wrap me up
  • A nurse came with my discharge info
  • I paid a mere $50.00 on the way out

The best part is that the people were great! Everyone was polite and friendly, joked around with me a little, and were so helpful in assisting me in trying to figure out how to care for my foot over the next few days/weeks.

Believe me, there was still a ton of pain over the last day or so! But how great of an experience I had really made a difference on my attitude. I’m definitely glad I went to the ER rather than trying to care for my nail myself, and I’m glad I went with Kaiser.

I wanna know, when was the last time you visited the doctor/hospital? How was your experience?

Goodnight,
Tiera

Toe The ER

What and adventure I had on Saturday, let me tell you! I was getting ready to go to my cousin’s high school graduation, when I tripped walking up the stairs at my mom’s house. What I thought was a stubbed toe turned out to be a little bit worse — I had ripped my big toe nail almost completely off :( It had lifted up, almost at a 90-degree angle, and was only attached at the cuticle.

For a while my family and I thought we could figure it out, but after a couple of hours of soaking my foot in water and Hawaiian salt (in an aluminum baking pan, so my foot could fit flat, lol!) and trying to clean it out (while I stuffed my face in a pillow to scream and swear), I started to realize that I needed professional help.

The bff came over and called her dad (a fire chief, and the closest thing we have to a medical professional), and he recommended I try to push the nail back down (it was far too painful, we tried) and see a doctor. My mom had to pop into work for a few minutes, and when she got home we headed to the ER.

After a quick exam, my toe was numbed up and cleaned out, and the doctor was able to put the nail back in place. He said that was the better option than removing the nail, as the skin underneath needs to be protected as it heals. It could take a few weeks, but when it’s ready it will fall off on it’s own and (hopefully!) a new nail will begin growing in it’s place.

So for now my nail’s bandaged up like a golf ball and I’m keeping it elevated. The anesthesia has worn off, so it’s pretty painful. I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to drive and sit at work all day, but I’ll tackle that tomorrow when the day comes.

In the mean time, watch your toes, people!

I wanna know, have you ever had to go to the ER? What’s the worst/latest injury you’ve had lately?

Safety first,
Tiera

PS: We got some pretty gnarly pictures of my toe. I was all about it yesterday, but now that I’m out of the moment, it’s even grossing me out! So I’ll spare you the gore ;)
