Favorite Movie Soundtracks

After putting together a little somethin’ about the music of the film Country Strong, I’ve been thinking about some of my other favorite soundtracks. There are some great ones out there, and so much great music comes from the world of film! So I made a list of my favorites, and tried not to load it up too much with Disney movies and musicals :) PS: See some music videos below.

  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Bodyguard
  • Chicago
  • Coal Miner’s Daughter
  • Country Strong

  • O Brother, Where Art Thou
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Rent
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Saturday Night Fever
  • The Sound of Music

Simple Pleasures

I read a great article on Tiny Buddha the other day: 10 Simple Tips to Live Happy, Wild, and Free.

In short, it was about pursuing simple pleasures like exercise, mindful eating and conversation, nature and sunshine, creativity, self-love, cold showers, and turning off the TV!

But the number one item was to write out a short list of the simple things that give you pleasure — So I thought I’d give it a try.

  • Cuddles with Hua & Hinano
  • A Disney movie
  • Getting (or giving myself) and manicure & pedicure
  • Trying out a new recipe, and feeding my family with it
  • Reading a thrilling book
  • Taking a beautiful photograph
  • The smell of beautiful flowers
  • Meditating in silence
  • Food with friends
  • Spending time with my nephews
  • Crossing something off my to-do list
  • Anything that can make me laugh out loud
  • Exchanging I love yous with my parents
  • Learning something new
  • Singing out loud

I wanna know, what are some of the simple pleasures in your life?

Xoxo,
Tiera

Cookbook: Lately

It’s been ages since the last time I worked on a cookbook post :( And while I don’t have a specific recipe to share, here’s a look at some of the simple home cooking I’ve been whipping up in the kitchen lately.

  • Lemon Shrimp over Caesar Salad
Part of a feast my cousins and I cooked up one night. We sauteed the shrimp in a butter and lemon and mixed romaine hearts, croutons and parmesan cheese with a creamy caesar dressing, then served the shrimp over the salad and squeezed fresh lemon over the whole thing.
  • Ahi Burgers over Arugula & Shiitake Mushroom Salad
Arugula is my new favorite green, and I made a salad with it and shiitake mushrooms and a ginger-miso dressing (I got it from Whole Foods, but I’ll try to come up with my own recipe soon!). The ahi burgers (which I did buy) were simple patties of ahi, onions, limu and breadcrumbs.
  • Beef Luau Stew
My mom and I helped my Uncle Zack make these while he taught us to use a pressure cooker. Luau is a Hawaiian dish that’s made with steamed luau leaves (the top of the kalo/taro plant, from which poi is made) and coconut milk. It’s often served with squid, but it’s also served with beef, like ours was.
  • Pork with Onions & Cabbage and Misoyaki Sauce
I started off browning pork chops and pork belly, sauteeing one onion, and adding in misoyaki sauce (mine was from a bottle, but most include miso, shoyu, sake, mirin and sugar). I braised Chinese cabbage in some chicken stock, then added it and some of the stock to the pork & onion mixture, and let everything finish cooking together for a few more minutes.

So simple, right?! Quick and easy things like this are really helping my achieve my goal of eating out less and cooking more :)

I wanna know, what have you been cooking lately? Got any recipes to share?

Cheers!

Mixplate Monday 6.27.11

I’m mentally preparing myself for yet another crazy week or work and a big surprise :) But first up is Mixplate Monday!

Last Week’s Highlights

Weekend Happenings

  • Didn’t have my puppy playdate :( And stayed in bed feeling pretty crappy. Double :( :(
  • Got even more work done! I’m quite looking forward to the new freelancing opportunities that are hopefully in my future!
  • Feasted on yet another poke bowl
  • Set up a little nook in the house for H&H :) They’ve got little pop-up pens big enough for their beds and everything!
  • Hung out with my uncle, who was visiting us for the day

On the Agenda

  • Several days of straight craziness at the office. It’s been non-stop events for days, and it’s not stopping for a while.
  • Finishing up a few things — Like laundry and a book
  • A super surprise something for this holiday weekend :)

As of Today

  • Wearing: Body By Victoria perfume; I got a VS fragrance collection for Christmas, and it’s the first time I’m trying this one
  • Wanting: To give myself a manicure
  • Returning: A few pairs of shorts I bought last week that I’ve decided I could live without

I wanna know, what were your recent highlights? And what are you up to?

Cheers!
Tiera

Link Lovin’ 6.26.11

I just brought Hua & Hinano in from a short walk, and they’re quiet in their beds — Well, Hua’s restless, but quiet. And I’m finally taking some time to just sit here and put together a list of some of my favorites from the last week or so.

I wanna know, what’s rocking your corner of the interwebs? Got any links to share?

Xoxo,
Tiera

PS: Stay tuned for some videos tomorrow :)
