Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

Robert Frost is one of my favorite poets. His works like “Fire and Ice” and “The Road Not Taken” are known all over the world; but my absolute favorite Frost poem is “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”. It’s simple but vivid, and the last stanza is, well, you’ll see…

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I wanna know // Who is your favorite poet? What is your favorite poem?

First Week of School

I’m smack dab in the middle of the first week of school. I hate/love this. It’s already taking over my life, but I know that every minute is getting me closer to (finally) getting a degree. I’m 24. A little late, I know.

My two classes are Film & Literature and World Civilizations I. Both require a ridiculous amount of reading, so my nights/weekends are filling up quickly; But both classes look like they’re going to be pretty interesting, so that helps.

Plus I’m continuing to work full-time, and even considering an additional part-time job; Gotta make that money, honnaaay! The point is, I’m busy. And as much as I would like to continue to try and post everyday here at Side Culture, that’s not realistic. I’m barely even keeping up with blog reading and Twitter! Maybe once a couple of weeks have gone by and I find my rhythm I can give that a more honest effort. In the mean time, I’ll be buried in textbooks and checking in when I can. Don’t miss me too much ;)

I wanna know // What has taken over your life recently? Got any study tips?!

August Break 18 // Halona Lookout

One of the few things I miss about being in a relationship is having a partner you can drag to do anything, even if you just want to drive (at least I’m on an island, it’s not like I’m going that far). This lookout is not too far from one of my favorite beaches, Eternity’s.

I wanna know // What’s your favorite beach or swimming hole? What have you photographed lately?

Xoxo,

Working Q&A

I’ve been fortunate to have some really unique work opportunities in my life — and with so many people out of work all together, I find it a little selfish to complain. But I read two posts on working this week that got me thinking about whether or not I’m happy and what I see for myself in the future, so I thought I’d play along with the Q&A these bloggers shared.

My blog twin, Jen, is making her way through 48 Days to the Work You Love by Dan Miller. And even though I’m not reading the book, I’m following her progress, which includes the tasks/questionnaire at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 1: What is Work?

  1. Who gave you your first job? What kind of job was it? How much money did you make?
I got my first job (press box announcer, calling the play-by-play for all the University of Hawai’i football home games) from Lois (my calabash aunty haha!), when she was the director of media relations for the UH athletic department. It was my Freshman year in high school, and I missed the first game of the season because I was performing in Japan (and I remember it was right after 9/11 ’cause I was so scared to get on the plane!). I got fed dinner (which was usually pretty good, not concession food) and got to watch football for freesies :) Plus $40/game — Wait, now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure they still owe me money!
  2. From looking at your work life so far, what has been the greatest value or worth?
It was short-lived, but my time at Hawaiian Airlines (as a reservations agent) has been the most valuable because of how much I experienced. It was a crazy application process that included at least three rounds of panel interviews, followed by a month of full-time, unpaid classroom/practical training, and a make or break final exam. I learned a new skill set from scratch, met and worked with people of different age groups (I was the baby, as usual) and backgrounds, learned the old school art of phone etiquette, and the importance of being able to think and quickly on my feet. And when the department closed down and I lost my job, I learned I was resilient — And how to be humble when I had to go ask for my old job back at the restaurant, ha!
  3. If your job changes, does your purpose change?
Not really. I think my number one purpose is to support myself financially and earn benefits (ain’t that the way it goes), and then to explore new things, learn as much as I can, and contribute to the team I work with.
  4. Do you think your current job will exist five years from now?
As it stands, no. Our company is trying to advance its technology and I can definitely see a lot of my regular tasks becoming automated, but I think the event managers will always have a need for a support staff in some way.
  5. What would be the key characteristics of an ideal job or career?
Mentally stimulating, friendly colleagues who work hard, meeting new people, a mix of time in the office and out, flexible hours :)
  6. When you daydream, what do you see yourself doing?
Some type of public relations — Including writing, social media, and coordinating events and other activities.
  7. What have been the happiest, most fulfilling moments in your life?
Professionally it would be being recognized for achievements — I’ve won sales and education awards, and been asked to be a trainer.
  8. If nothing changed in your life in the next five years, would that be okay?
No. To start with, I don’t even want to be in the same state!

I recently started reading Katie’s blog, Breathe & Hush, and she participated in another Q&A on working, that featured 10 questions on the subject of jobs.

Ten on Tuesday: Jobs

  1. What do you do for a living?
I am an assistant at an event planning and production company.
  2. What’s your favorite thing about your job?
Looking at pictures of cute boys to hire (true story). I’ve also enjoyed learning more about the industry, as event/wedding planning is something I’ve thought about doing for a long time.
  3. What’s your least favorite thing about your job?
Accounting. Ugh, I hate it. When I started my job, I did a few accounting-related things a week, now it can take up about half my day. And making it more frustrating is (a) we have an outside accounting firm who I think should be doing some of what I am, (b) no one else gives a crap about accounting, so I’m left to chase everything down and do a double/triple check.
  4. If you weren’t a __________, what would you be?
If I weren’t a event planning assistant, I think I’d be pursuing something in public relations.
  5. What is something that you would love to get paid for, that you think no one would ever pay you for?
    Listening to podcasts.
  6. If you could have any job for exactly one day, what would it be?
President of the United States, of course!
  7. If you had to do manual labor, what would you do?
Does doing laundry count? I know it’s boring, but I don’t mind it. At least detergent smells good, plus it’s indoors and brainless. And as strange as it sounds I actually like folding clothes haha!
  8. What is something you were forced to learn in high school that was supposed to be super important, but you never actually use?
Almost all forms of science and math.
  9. Who was your favorite boss? Why?
Scotty Mac at Stu’s; He was friendly, knowledgable, helpful, and really cared about our little group of misfits at the restaurant!
  10. Where would you rather work: Dunder Mifflin Paper Company (The Office US), Wernham Hogg Paper Company (The Office UK), or Intech (Office Space)?
Werham Hogg fo sho! The people are hilarious — And, hello, it’s in England!

I wanna know // What was your first job? What do you do now? What do you want to do in the future?

Cheers!
Tiera
