Hawai’i Needs: Food, Fashion & Furniture
When I saw the above article (Olive Garden Has its Eye on Hawai’i) in Pacific Business News on Friday, I got super excited! I may have even threw my hands up in the air and shouted “woohoo”.
After my moment of pure jubliation, I thought about a post I drafted but hadn’t posted yet: things I wish we had in Hawai’i.
- DSW
- Five Guys Burgers and Fries
- H&M
- In-N-Out Burger
- Kohl’s
- Olive Garden
- Sonic
- Trader Joe’s
- Ulta
However, we’ve gotten a few places in recent years that I’d been waiting for:
- Bath & Body Works
- Bed, Bath & Beyond
- Target
- Victoria’s Secret
The article offered a little more details on the matter of national retailers in Hawai’i:
- Opened first store since 2006: Bath & Body Works, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Chico’s, David’s Bridal, Forever 21, Lululemon, Nordstrom, Petco, Target, Victoria’s Secret, Walgreens, Whole Foods
- Looking for space: Anthropologie, Applebees, The Capital Grille, H&M, Olive Garden, PetSmart, Urban Outfitters
- Not coming anytime soon: Crate and Barrel, Ikea, Pottery Barn, Trader Joe’s
I wanna know // What national retailers do you frequent? What do you wish you had in your neck of the woods?

I have no illusions about my photography skills (it’s nowhere near my knack for correcting other peoples’ grammar), but I’m growing to love it! Like, beyond posing for pictures with my girls for Facebook ;) And learning to stop feeling the shame of busting out my camera anywhere and everywhere and taking photos of anything and everything.
Here are a few snapshots from Gate 26 at Honolulu International Airport, while I was waiting for my flight to El Lay. You know, before everyone told me to leave my camera at home and enjoy the vacation :)
I wanna know // What have you been lately? And what have you photographed?

Makiki Community Gardens
I’m on a mission to take more (and hopefully better) pictures this summer. And it seems like perfect strangers want that for me as well!
I was walking past the Makiki Community Gardens (at Makiki Park, just off the Makiki St. parking lot), when an older couple started chatting me up — Asking about my camera, and letting me into their plots to take photos! The woman even offered up her husband to pose for a few, lol ;) So I talked story for a little while, and took them up on their offer to let me photograph their gardens.
A sweet little adventure, if I do say so myself :)
I wanna know, what’s the latest thing you’ve photographed? Do you plant anything in a garden?

Farmers Market Food: Joe Aloha
The Makiki Farmers Market hits so many high notes, but most importantly there is a variety of fresh food and produce and it’s five minutes away from my house :) I wanted to grab dinner before I headed home the other day so I called my friend Bobert (who lives even closer than I do) and we scored a table and found some food.
I was torn between the Thai food (which I’ve been wanting to try for a while now) and a booth I’d never seen before, Joe Aloha Catering & Food Truck. We both went with Joe Aloha — Smoked chicken & fresh ahi (above) for me and smoked ribs & chicken (below) for Bob.
I asked for seared ahi, so it was still pretty rare in the center — perfect! The chicken was juicy and even the skin was good (have I mentioned that Thursday is my new cheat day?!). The ribs had a lot of meat, and a little bit of a char siu flavor. Overall both were delicious, and at $10 for each combo plate, I’d say we made out well with really good (and more than enough) food!
Next up on the MFM checklist: Thai food, organic & grass-fed beef, and fresh fruits and veggies :)
Makiki Farmers Market – The Parish of St. Clement, 1515 Wilder Ave. (at the corner of Wilder Ave. + Makiki St.); 4:30-7:30pm every Thursday
I wanna know, do you frequent your local farmers market? What’s your favorite thing to buy or eat?

This is a total mix of touristy, places I think are beautiful or special, and places to get your grub on :)
I wanna know, what are your favorite places on Oahu? What about in your town?
